Screens like those you see in old movies where women always go behind to change can be used to separate and define the living space. Placing them in between spaces creates a wall therefore a new space.

There are screens that are available now that have photo frames in them, so not only are they functional, they are decorative as well.

De-Clutter

Nothing makes a space look smaller and more congested like excess clutter. Find places to store the clutter by storing it away in closets or by adding shelves to the room to place cherished items. Otherwise, do a thorough cleaning and purge all of the items you do not want or need.

Rearranging

By rearranging furniture you can make a huge difference in the way a room looks. Making sure that the furniture you do have is out of the main walkway, and is small, will make a room appear less cluttered and larger.

Color

Go lighter and brighter! The darker the color the smaller a room can feel, by lightening up the wall colors you will create the illusion that the room is bigger, more open and airier. Use pastels and bright colors such as yellows or shades of white.

Lighting

A room that is brightly lit will look larger, so get rid of those dark draperies and let the light in. If you have small windows that don’t let in a lot of light, think about adding recessed or track lighting to brighten up the room.

Mirrors

Hanging mirrors on the wall are a great way to create the feeling that a room is larger than it is.  Mirrors reflect the space making it seem larger and also offer a beautiful design element.

Fabrics

Keep all fabrics light and sheer if you can. Choosing sheer curtains will allow natural light to come in. Also go with lighter and plain fabrics for couches and chairs. Clean lines and crisp colors can make all the difference.
